Nina Sibal Bio
Nina Sibal was an Indian diplomat and a very popular writer. She is known for her prize-winning novel Yatra and other English language fiction as well. Moreover, she is also known for her work in the Indian Foreign Service. She wrote short stories and novels.
Early life and Education
She was born in 1948 in Pune. Her father was an Indian and her mother was a Greek so her nationality was Indian. She did an MA in English from Delhi University. After that, she lectured there for three years. She was also qualified in law and studied French as well.

Career
In 1972, she joined the Indian Foreign Service and worked at the United Nations in New York City. Her other postings included Cairo where she served for three years as Deputy Director-General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. In 1992, she became India’s permanent representative to UNESCO in Paris. In 1995, she went to New York to be director of its liaison office there.
Writing
In 1985, her fiction was noticed and came into the limelight when her short story What a blaze of glory won an Asiaweek short story competition. Later it was included in an anthology called prize-winning Asian Fiction which was published in 1991.
In 1987, her novel Yatra was published which covered more than a century in the life of a Sikh family. The novel won the 1987 International Grand Prix for Literature in Algiers.
In 1991, Sibal’s collection of short stories The Secret Life of Gujjar Mal was published. The stories of this book are set in a variety of different countries and some of them are also disguised with fictional names as well as with the title story, there are other six stories as well. In 1998, her other novel The Dogs of Justice was published. This novel is set in Kashmir and tells the story of a rich Muslim girl but it was less well-received than the other two books of her.
Personal life
She was married to Kapil Sibal in 1973 who was a lawyer and politician and they had two sons
She died in June 2009 in New York from breast cancer.
Award
A Nina Sibal Memorial award was provided by her husband. The All India Women’s Education Fund Association gives the award annually to an individual who plays a leading role in an organization and uses innovative methods to help disabled and disadvantaged children.
