    Pratibha Patil Bio

    Pratibha Devi Singh Patil is an Indian politician and lawyer. She served as the 12th president of India and she was the first female and the first Maharashtrian to hold this post. She was a member of the Indian National Congress and had previously served as governor of Rajasthan from 2004 to 2007.

    Early life and Education

    She was born on 19 December 1934 in Chalisgaon, district Jalgaon, Bombay Presidency, British India. Currently, she is 87 years old as of 2021. She is the daughter of Narayan Rao Patil.

    She completed her early education at R.R. Vidyalaya, Jalgaon. After that, she was awarded a master’s degree in Political Science and Economics by Mool jee Jetha College, Jalgaon. Later, she got a Bachelor of Law degree from Government Law College, Bombay which was affiliated with the University of Bombay.

    Political career

    At the age of 27, in 1962, she contested for Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for the Jalgaon constituency. After that, she won in the Muktainagar constituency in four consecutive events between 1967 and 1985. Later from 1985 to 1990, she became a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. Then in 1991 elections for the 10th Lok Sabha, she was elected as a member of parliament representing the Amravati constituency.

    She has held many positions during her period. From 1967 to 1972, She was Deputy Minister for Public Health, Prohibition, Tourism, Housing, and Parliamentary Affairs. From 1972 to 1974, she was the cabinet minister for social welfare. Then from 1974 to 1975, she was cabinet minister of Public Health and social welfare. That from 1975 to 1976, she was a cabinet minister for Prohibition, Rehabilitation, and Cultural affairs. From 1977 to 1978, she was a cabinet minister for Education. Then from 1979 to 1980, she was the leader of the opposition for the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Then from 1982 to 1985, she was a cabinet minister for Urban Development and housing. From 1983 to 1985 she was also cabinet minister for civil supplies and social welfare. From 1986 to 1988 she served as Deputy chairman for Rajya Sabha. Then from 1991 to 1996, she was the chairman of the house committee for Lok Sabha.

    On 8 November 2004, she was appointed as the 17th governor of Rajasthan and she was the first woman to hold that office. She served in that position till June 2007.

    Then on 25 July 2007, she became the first female President of India and held that position till 25 July 2012.

    Personal life

    On 17 July 1965, she married Devisingh Ram Singh Shekhawat and they had a daughter named Mrs. Jyoti Rathore and a son named Rajendra Singh alias Raosaheb Shekhawat who is also a politician now.

    Honour

    She was awarded the special category Sash of the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle on 3 August 2018 – presented 1 June 2019 by Mexico.
