The Gujarat High Court acquitted Maya Kodnani, the main suspect in the 2002 Gujarat NarodaPatiya massacre, of all counts on Friday. The court granted Kodnani, who had previously been convicted and sentenced to 28 years in prison, the benefit of the doubt. She was the lone woman among the 32 people charged in connection with the disturbances. Kodnani is a member of the BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) and served as a state minister under Gujarat Chief Minister NarendraModi. According to the Indian Express, Kodnani began her political career in politics and rose to prominence during the riots.
Kodnani’s ancestors are reported to have originated in Sindh’s Tharak par district, where her father, a Rasht riya Swa ya mse vak Sangh (RSS) worker, fled during partition. Gujarat is where she was born and raised. Her early schooling was finished at her father’s Gujarati-medium school in the Deesa area of Banas kanth district. Kodnani went on to Baroda Medical College for his higher study, where he earned his MBBS and a Diploma in Gynae cology and Obstetrics. She established a maternity hospital in Kuber nagar, Ahmedabad’s Naroda, after completing her schooling.

Maya Kodnani got her start in politics in Ahmedabad. She became a member of the Rasht riya Sevika Samiti, an RSS-affiliated women’s org ani sation. She later ran for the Saijpur ward in Ahmedabad city elections in 1995. She was elected to the Legislative Assembly three times for the BJP from the Naroda Constituency (1998, 2002, and 2007).
Despite her suspected role in the Gujarat riots, she was appointed as the state’s Minister of State for Women and Child Development under NarendraModi’s leadership in 2007. But, after being found guilty of her role in the NarodaPatiya Massacre by a trial court, she resigned from her office just two years after taking over the charge.
