    On February 24, 1948, Jayalalithaa was born in Melu kote, Mysore (now in the state of Karnataka). Her ancestors were Tamil I yen gar s. When she was two years old, her father, Jayaram, a lawyer by profession, died. As a result, Jayalalitha and her brother Jayakumar, as well as their mother, were forced to relocate to Bangalore.
