Muthu lakshmi Reddy Bio
Muthu lakshmi Reddy was an Indian medical practitioner and social reformer. In 1956 she was awarded Padma Bhushan. She had made records with her name including she is the first female student to be admitted into men’s college and she was the first woman House surgeon in the Government Maternity and Ophthalmic Hospital. Moreover, she is the first woman legislator in British India and was the first chairperson of the State Social Welfare Advisory board. She was also the first women President of the Legislative Council.

Early life
She was born on 30 July 1886 in Princely State of Pudukkottai, Madras Presidency, India. She belongs to a Tamil family. She is the daughter of S. Narayanaswami Iyer who was the Principal of Maharaja’s College and Chandrammal who was a Devdasi.
Education
In her time, there were many limitations faced by girls. But her father broke all traditions and set her to school. She completed her higher education and joined the medical profession. She got admission to Madras Medical College in 1907. She won several gold medals and prizes for her excellent academic records. In 2012, she became the first woman doctor in India.
Political career
In 1929, she became a member of the Legislative Council and the first woman to be a member of any legislature in India. She became the first woman in the world to become the vice president of a legislative when she was elected as the deputy chairperson of the Legislative Council. She played a major role in raising the minimum marriage age for women in India. In 1930, she resigned from the Madras legislature as a protest due to the imprisonment of Mahatma Gandhi. She also argued for the cancellation of the Devdasi system which was widely spread in Tamilnadu at that time.
She was the founder president of the Women’s Indian Association (WIA) and she made a record by becoming the first alderwoman of the Madras Corporation.
She also encourage setting up toilets and Women’s toilets and started measures to improve the medical facilities given to slum dwellers. In 1930, she established Avvai Illam.
Personal life
In 1914, at the age of 28, she got married to Sunadra Reddy on one condition and he accepted it. The promise was ‘ to always respect me as an equal and never cross my wishes’. According to the Native Marriage Act 1872, they got married and she got the surname Reddy.

Awards and Books
In 1956, the Government of India conferred Padma Bhushan in recognization to offer meritorious service to the nation. She also inspired an award which is given to women who have given service in Cancer prevention.
She has written a book My Experience as a Legislator which recounts her initiatives in respect of social reforms which was taken by her in the Madras legislature.
