    Facts to Ponder Sumitra Mahajan is the second woman to be elected Speaker of the LokSabha, following Meira Kumar. In 1989, she contested for the first time and defeated former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Prakash Chandra Sethi in the LokSabha elections. She holds the distinction of being the only woman member of Parliament to be elected to the LokSabha Speaker’s office eight times in a row from the same constituency. Devi AhilyaBaiHolkar took part in talks, seminars, and public discourses on the Mahabharata and Geeta’s teachings. She is the former President of the Madhya Pradesh Marathi Academy and the Chairperson of the Indore Ahilya Utsav Committee and the Indore Contemporary Study Centre.

    In March 2018, she organised and chaired the first-ever National Conference of Women Legislators as well as the first-ever National Legislators Conference in New Delhi.

    Sumitra Mahajan was born on April 12, 1943, in Chiplun, Maharashtra’s District Ratnagiri. Tai is her common nickname among Indore and Malwa residents. She attended school in the Maharashtra town of Ratnagiri. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.). After that, she married Jayant Mahajan, a well-known Indore lawyer, on January 29, 1965.

    She and her spouse moved to Indore, Madhya Pradesh after they married. In terms of her higher education, she received her M.A. and LLB degrees from Indore University, which is currently known as Devi AhilyaVishwavidyalaya. She had a lot of difficulties once she completed her legal studies.
