    V. S. Rama devi Bio

    V. S. Rama devi was an Indian British Raj politician. She was the first lady to become the 13th Governor of Karnataka and 9th Chief Election Commissioner of India from 26 November 1990 to 11 December 1990. She was the first and to date woman to serve as Secretary-General of Rajya Sabha from 1st July 1993 to 25 September 1997. Moreover, she was also the first and to date only female Governor of Karnataka from December 1999 to 20 August 2002.

    She was born on 15 January 1934 in Che bro lu, Madras Presidency, British India. Her nationality was Indian.

    Early life

    Rama devi was born in Cheb rolu of West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh and she was born on the date when the Sankranti harvest festival happens. Her father’s name was Sarve palli Veera swamy She completed her education in Eluru. After that, she completed her M.A. LLB in the Andhra Pradesh High Court and then she registered her name as an advocate.

    Political career

    On 26 November 1990, she became the Chief Election Commissioner of India and served that post till 12 December 1990. She was succeeded by T N Seshan and preceded by R.V.S Peri Sastri. After that from 1 July 1993 to 25 July 1997, she was the Secretary-General of Rajya Sabha. There, she was preceded by Sudarshan Agarwal and succeeded by S. S. Sohoni. Then from 26 July 1997 to 1 December 1999, she was the Governor of Himachal Pradesh; preceded by Mahaveer Prasad and succeeded by Vishnu Kant Sha stri. Later from 2 December 1999 to 20 August 2002, she was the Governor of Karnataka. She was preceded by Khur shed Alam Khan and succeeded by T.N. Chaturvedi.

    On 17 April 2013, she died at her residence in HSR Layout Bangalore due to cardiac arrest. She was 79 years old when she died in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.
