    Vijaya Raje Scindia bio

    Vijaya Raje Scindia is popularly known with the title of Rajmata of Gwalior. She was an important Indian Politician. During the British Raj, she ranked among the highest royal figures of the land. Later, she became a politician and her behavior and considerable thoughts influenced everyone. As a result, she was elected to both the houses of the Indian parliament several times. For many decades, she served as an active member of the Jana Sangh and also worked as co-founder of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

    Early life and Education

    She was born on 12 October 1999 at Sagar (presently Madhya Pradesh), Central Province, and Berar, British Raj. She was the eldest child of her parents and at her birth, they name Lekha Divyeshwari Devi. Her father Thakur Mahendra Singh was a government officer, he worked as deputy collector in the provincial administration of Kotla state presently U.P. Her mother ChudaDevanshwari Devi was the second wife of his father. She was raised in the household of her maternal grandparents.

    In the beginning, she studied at home but later she completed studies at the  Vasanta College, Benares, and the Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow. For her studies, she stayed at the lady’s hostel and spent her life as other hostel students did.

    Political career

    In 1957, she stepped into electoral politics and contested and won the Guna Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh as a Congress Party member. After 5 years, she won a Congress ticket from Gwalior. In 1967, she quit the Congress and won the Guna on Swatantra party ticket. She soon joined Bhartiya Janta Sangh and resigned from Lok Sabha to take part in state politics and won the Karera assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh as a Jan Sangh candidate. In 1977 and 1984 she did not contest Lok Sabha elections and in 1980 she lost to Indira Gandhi in Rae Bareli. Then in 1989, she won from Guna as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and held that seat in 1991, 1996, and 1998. Then in 1999, she could not contest in the elections due to old age. And during the time of emergency, she was also jailed by Indira Gandhi.

    Personal life

    At the age of 22, Lekha got married to tuJivajirao Scindia in February 1941. Her husband was Maharaja of Gwalior which is one of the largest richest and highest-ranking 21-gun-salute princely states in India. As per the early traditions she was named Vijaya Raje Scindia after matching the horoscope of both couples. Both the couples have four daughters and one son named Padmawati Raje, Usha Raje Rana, Madhav Rao Scindia, Vasundhara Raje, and Yashodhara Raje.

    At the age of 81, Vijaya Raje Scindia died on 25 January 2001 in New Delhi, India.
