    Nandini Satpathy Bio

    Nandini Satpa thy was a well-known Indian politician and author. She served as a Chief Minister of Odisha from June 1972 to December 1976. She was a member of the Indian National Congress.

    Early life

    She was born Nandini Panigrahi on 9 June 1931 in Cuttack, Orissa, British India. She was born in a Brahman family to Kalindi Charan Panigrahi and Ratnamani Panigrahi. She grew up in Pithapur, Cuttack India.

    When she was pursuing her Masters of Arts in Odia at Ravenshaw College, she got involved with the student wing of the Communist Party, Student Federation. Then in 1951, a protest movement began in Odisha by students against rising college education costs and later this movement changed into the National Youth Movement. Nandini was the leader of this movement and the police force attacked the protestors and Nandini. They all were severely injured. She was also jailed with many others. And there she met Devendra Satpathy who was also another student Federation member. He is the same man she married later.

    Political career

    In 1962, the Congress party was dominant in Orissa and there was also a movement to have more women representatives in the Indian Parliament. So the Assembly selected Nandani Satpathy who was president of the women’s forum at that time and she was elected to the upper house of India’s parliament. She served there for two terms. Then in 1966, she became Minister attached to the Prime Minister and her specific portfolio was the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

    In 1972, she returned to Odisha and became the Chief Minister of Odisha. Then in December 1976, she left office. In 1977, she has elected to Orissa Vidhan sabha from Dhenkanal. Then in 1980, she won the seat as Congress candidate and in 1985 as an independent.

    In 1989, she was returned to the Congress party at the request of Rajiv Gandhi. After that, she was elected as a member of the state legislative assembly from Gondia, Dhenkanal, and served in the Assembly until 2000. After that, she retired from politics.

    Personal life

    She was married to Devendra Satpathy and they had two sons. Her younger son Tathagata Satpathy was a four-time member of parliament from Biju Janata Dal.

    She died on 4 August 2006 at her home in Bhubaneswar at the age of 75.

    Literary career

    She was also a writer in the Odia language and she has received the Sahitya Bharati Samman award for her contribution to Oriya literature in 1998. Her last major literary work was translating Taslima Nasreen’s Lajja into Oriya.

    Legacy
